The Columbia University Medicine Veterans (CU MedVets) student group exists to connect and aid military veterans who are in the process of pursuing a career in healthcare.
Shared Goals
The first goal of MedVets is to inform. This includes information about classes, advisors, requirements, and opportunities. Certainly, there is much information available to guide you through the pre-med process, however, it is my hope we can create and maintain resources to inform and educate the MedVets community on the nuances of pursuing medicine after Columbia or any undergraduate school. To this end this website features a guide to Columbia coursework, insight into the internal application process for committee support and a page dedicated to resources that explain every step of applying for medical school.
Secondly, MedVets will seek to connect. Many veterans from Columbia have gone on to medical schools all over New York and beyond. They are more than willing to advise, assist, and help match you to the right opportunities; be that in research, volunteering, or otherwise. Networking events and word of mouth will help accomplish this goal. Please try to take time to attend upcoming virtual social hours, office hours, or reach out if you are interested in doing research or volunteering in the New York City area.
Lastly, we hope MedVets can introduce you to friends and fellow student veterans that are in the same classes and give you the help of study groups, class notes, and camaraderie. At any given time veterans can be found in all required pre-med classes from chemistry to biology to calculus. Reach out if you are in one of those classes and we will do our best to connect you to an ongoing study group.
